Ask the Burlington Eye Doctor: What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts occur when the normally clear lens inside your eye becomes cloudy or opaque, like a fogged glass window. This happens due to structural changes in the proteins making up the lens fibers.

Certain factors, such as excessive UV radiation exposure, smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, air pollution, diabetes, and genetics are believed to play a role in cataract development. A primary risk factor is advancing age, especially age 60+. A history of eye surgery or trauma, as well as certain congenital factors, may lead to cataract development, as well.

Signs & Symptoms of Cataracts

If you experience any of the following issues, you may be living with cataracts (which can occur in one or both eyes):

  • Blurry vision (like looking through a foggy glass)
  • Increased sensitivity to glare and bright lights
  • Eyeglasses that don't seem to work well
  • Double vision
  • New onset of nearsightedness (generally among older patients)

Perhaps the most surprising symptom of a cataract is no symptoms at all. It's only once cataracts become big enough before clinical manifestations actually develop, but they can still be diagnosed and detected by an eye doctor in the early stage—so scheduling a routine eye exam is essential, especially as you get older!

How Our Burlington Optometrist Helps People Living with Cataracts

Cataracts are diagnosable on a comprehensive eye exam with our Burlington optometrist. If you've been diagnosed, your treatment options may include:

  • Up-to-date prescription eyeglasses
  • Low vision strategies, including tips on enlarging digital text and the use of audiovisual adaptations
  • Pre- and post-surgical care for cataract removal and lens replacement

If you're at risk for cataracts, our eye doctor can also educate you on ways to adjust your lifestyle which may reduce your likelihood of developing or possibly slow their development, including broad-spectrum UV protection for your eyes, smoking cessation, and healthy diet and exercise (especially if you have diabetes or another chronic disorder).
